Gośālā Architecture & Paśu Śāstra
The compassionate and scientific architecture of bovine sanctuaries (Gośālās): species-appropriate dimensions, biophilic ventilation, natural floor gradients, and closed-loop circular bio-flows.

1. Humane Spatial Dimensions & Cross-Ventilation
Indigenous Indian cattle (Bos indicus) have distinct physiological needs. Classical texts enforce specific spatial standards:
East-West Axial Orientation
The long axis of the barn runs East-West with an open ridge vent. This allows gentle morning sunlight to illuminate stalls while shielding cattle from scorching mid-day sun, facilitating continuous North-South cross breezes.
Space Allocation Standards
Minimum 45 to 50 sq ft per adult cow with an unconfined loafing paddock ($2\times$ covered area). Dedicated maternity pens (Sūtikā Gṛha, min 120 sq ft) for expectant mothers, ensuring stress-free calving.
Textured Floor Gradients
Floors constructed from breathable lime plaster or stone with a continuous 1:45 downward slope toward an external channel. Grooved herringbone textures prevent joint-damaging slips and hoof rot.
Floor Drainage Slope Formulation
Ensures rapid urine runoff while maintaining ergonomic bovine footing

2. Closed-Loop Zero-Waste Circular Bio-Flows
An authentic Vedic Gośālā is not an energy sink—it is a self-sustaining bioreactor. Pūjāvāni designs integrate four closed-loop output streams:
Flushed without fossil-fuel pumps directly into an anaerobic biogas digester in the South-East / South.
Methane gas piped directly to the sanctuary kitchen and water heaters, eliminating firewood or LPG.
Digested organic effluent recycled as natural liquid bio-fertilizer for fodder fields, closing the nutrient loop.
Thermal distillation producing therapeutic bio-pesticides and natural antimicrobial formulations.
