Āyādi Ṣaḍvarga Modular Formulations

The dimensional tuning mathematics of Sthāpatya Veda: converting building perimeters into sacredHasta units and applying six modular formulas to ensure energetic harmony and economic prosperity.

Mānasāra VāstuśāstraCh. 9 (Āyādilakṣaṇa), v. 14–16
B · Classical commentary

पदेनैवाष्टकं हत्वा द्वादशभिर्हरेत् फलम्। शेषं आय इति ख्यातं व्ययं दशभिरेव च॥

padenaivāṣṭakaṃ hatvā dvādaśabhir haret phalam | śeṣaṃ āya iti khyātaṃ vyayaṃ daśabhir eva ca ||

Translation:Multiplying the perimeter in Hastas by eight and dividing by twelve, the remainder is declared as Āya (Inflow). Multiplying by nine and dividing by ten yields Vyaya (Outflow).

1. Canonical Unit of Measure: The Sacred Hasta

In Vedic metrology, architectural proportions are never computed in arbitrary modern units. They are evaluated in Kiṣku Hasta (canonical cubit), standardized across classical literature:

1 Aṅgula
0.75 inches / 1.905 cm

Width of thumb / 8 Yava barley grains

1 Kiṣku Hasta
18.0 inches / 1.50 feet

Exactly 24 Aṅgulas (45.72 cm)

1 Daṇḍa
72.0 inches / 6.00 feet

4 Hastas (used in town planning)

Conversion to Canonical Hasta Perimeter

P_feet = 2 × (Width_feet + Length_feet)
P_hasta = P_feet / 1.50 = P_meters / 0.4572
All six modular Ayadi formulas take the integer or fractional perimeter in Hastas (P_hasta) as their primary input.
Parameters & variables
P_feet
Imperial Perimeter: Exterior wall perimeter in feet(feet)
P_hasta
Sacred Perimeter: Perimeter expressed in canonical Hastas(Hastas)

2. The 6 Canonical Modular Equations

The perimeter is multiplied by a sacred harmonic factor and modulo-divided to reveal six dimensions of cosmic resonance:

1. Āya (Income / Inflow)
Āya = (P_hasta × 8) mod 12

Remainder ranges from 1 to 12 (if 0, treated as 12). Higher numbers indicate greater abundance and financial stability.

2. Vyaya (Expenditure / Outflow)
Vyaya = (P_hasta × 9) mod 10

Remainder ranges from 1 to 10. Represents resource depletion and unexpected maintenance overhead.

3. Yoni (Directional Archetype)
Yoni = (P_hasta × 3) mod 8

Remainder determines the governing animal archetype. Odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7) are auspicious; even numbers (2, 4, 6, 0) are inauspicious.

4. Vāra (Weekday Resonance)
Vāra = (P_hasta × 9) mod 7

Remainder 1–7 links the building to planetary energies. Benefic planets (Jupiter=5, Venus=6, Mercury=4) are optimal.

5. Nakṣatra (Cosmic Asterism)
Nakṣatra = (P_hasta × 8) mod 27

Remainder 1–27 reveals the building’s birth Nakshatra, which should be harmoniously compatible with the owner’s birth star.

6. Āyu (Structural Longevity)
Āyu = (P_hasta × 27) mod 100

Remainder indicates the energetic lifespan of the structure in years. A value > 60 is highly desirable.

3. The Golden Rule: Āya > Vyaya

The Fundamental Economical Condition: Āya > Vyaya

Across all Sanskrit treatises (Mānasāra 9.16, Mayamata 9.19), the cardinal rule of architectural tuning is that Āya (Inflow) must strictly exceed Vyaya (Outflow). When Āya > Vyaya, the structure accumulates wealth, mental serenity, and vitality. If Vyaya ≥ Āya, occupants experience chronic financial leakage and debilitating stress.
