शास्त्रेण तेन सर्वेषां सुखानां सम्पदामपि। हेतुरेव विधातव्यः पुरुषार्थचतुष्टये॥

śāstreṇa tena sarveṣāṃ sukhānāṃ sampadām api | hetur eva vidhātavyaḥ puruṣārthacatuṣṭaye ||

Translation:Through this sacred science of architecture, the true foundation for all human well-being, material prosperity, and the attainment of the four aims of human existence (Dharma, Artha, Kāma, Mokṣa) is established.

The Two Great Architectural Lineages

Southern (Drāviḍa) Lineage: Sage Mānasāra & Mayāsura

Characterized by stone masonry precision, pyramidal Vimana geometry, strict Ayadi Shadvarga dimensional modulation, and astronomical orientation via the Śaṅku solar gnomon. Foundational texts include Mānasāra, Mayamata, and Śilparatna.

Northern (Nāgara) Lineage: Lord Viśvakarmā & King Bhoja

Characterized by curvi-linear Shikhara towers, 16-zone directional micro-grids, residential domestic zoning, civic fortifications, and mechanical treatises. Foundational texts include Viśvakarma Prakāśa, Samarāṅgaṇa Sūtradhāra, and Aparājitapṛcchā.

Mānasāra (मानसार)

Mayamata (मयमतम्)
